YOSEMITE’S SOUTHERN GATEWAY ENLIVENED WITH NEW COMMUNITY ART BANNER DISPLAY
Visitors and residents traveling along Highway 41 toward Yosemite National Park will now be greeted by 25 stunning, hand-painted banners. This initiative, spearheaded by the Eastern Madera County Foundation (EMCF) Beautification & Planning Committee, brings vibrant artistry to the region, showcasing local talent and enriching the community spirit.
The project represents a collaborative effort between the EMCF Beautification & Planning Committee and Visit Yosemite | Madera County. Rachael Snedecor, Chairperson of the EMCF Beautification & Planning Committee, previously organized a similar successful program in Livermore, CA. “In Livermore, we had city services and light poles to support the project. Here, in our gateway communities, it was all supported by our residents and business owners. A true community collaboration,” Snedecor said. Local property owners offered their poles, businesses funded the banners, artists contributed their talent, and Central Sierra Enterprises provided the equipment and staff for installation.
From Memorial Day through October, these banners provide a warm, artistic welcome to visitors and reflect the community’s spirit and hospitality. Rhonda Salisbury, CEO of Visit Yosemite | Madera County, expressed her gratitude, stating, “It is inspiring to see the community come together to showcase the immense artistic talent of our residents and enhance the visitor experience. Art is a way of life here in the southern gateway.”
The 25 vinyl banners are displayed in Coarsegold, Oakhurst, Bass Lake, and North Fork. Each banner, measuring 30″ x 60”, features a welcome message and a piece of original artwork by a local artist. No tax dollars were used for this project; it was entirely community-funded. Visitors can admire all 25 banners by picking up a Community Art Banner Flyer and Map at the Oakhurst Visitor Center.
In November, the banners will be auctioned at a community event, with proceeds going towards future beautification projects in the area.
