WALLPAPER WANDERLUST
We’re feeling the need for some inspiration from the confines of our office walls, and while we’re not fortunate enough to be embarking on a flight to exotic climes we’ve found an alternative to keep us happy – at least for now.
Wallpaper has been used for centuries to decorate homes and interiors. The earliest known wallpapers date back to the 16th century in Europe. These were hand-painted and expensive, making them a luxury item for the wealthy. It wasn’t until the 18th century that wallpaper became more readily available and affordable.
During the 19th century, wallpaper designs became more complex and intricate, with the introduction of new printing techniques. The Arts and Crafts movement also influenced wallpaper design, emphasizing handcrafted elements and natural motifs.
Evolution of Wallpaper Design:
In the 20th century, wallpaper design continued to evolve with the introduction of new materials and technologies. The mid-century modern era saw the rise of bold, graphic designs in wallpaper, often featuring geometric patterns and bright colors. The 1970s brought floral and botanical prints, as well as textured designs like grasscloth and cork.
Today, wallpaper design is more diverse than ever, with a range of styles and materials to choose from. Digital printing has allowed for intricate patterns and custom designs, while eco-friendly materials like recycled paper and non-toxic inks have become more popular.
Future of Wallpaper Design:
The future of wallpaper design looks promising, with sustainable materials and innovative technologies leading the way. 3D printing and augmented reality are expected to play a role in creating custom designs and immersive wallcoverings. Biophilic design, which incorporates natural elements into interiors, is also a growing trend in wallpaper design.
