URBAN ALCHEMIST: GREG MIKE REIMAGINES ATLANTA’S ART LANDSCAPE

Urban Alchemist: Greg Mike Reimagines Atlanta’s Art Landscape

Born and raised in Connecticut, Greg Mike’s creative journey began with childhood trips to New York City, where the vibrant street art scene opened his eyes to the transformative potential of public spaces. The city’s dynamic mix of graffiti and murals left an indelible impression on him, sparking a fascination that would later merge with his passion for mid-century cartoon characters. Today, Greg is a pivotal force in Atlanta’s contemporary art scene, where his gleefully twisted characters and electric colours adorn walls from Miami to the Swiss Alps, with Atlanta as his primary canvas.

Now based in Atlanta, he has made his mark as the founder and creative director of ABV AGENCY, a multi-platform creative studio specialising in street art, mural installations, and experiential design. His latest project, ABV Gallery—housed in a revamped, 8,500-square-foot former church on Metropolitan Avenue in East Atlanta Village—embodies his dedication to pushing Atlanta’s creative potential. The gallery is more than a venue; it’s a community space where exhibitions, live events, and rotating public art installations coalesce to showcase local and international talent. Greg envisions ABV Gallery as a cornerstone of Atlanta’s art scene, attracting both emerging and established artists and setting a new standard for creative expression in the city.

As he reflects on Atlanta’s burgeoning art landscape, Greg observes a thrilling evolution in the city’s creative energy. “Atlanta’s art scene has really come alive in recent years,” he says. “It’s exciting to see how diverse and vibrant it’s become. I see ABV Gallery and the OuterSpace Project as part of a larger movement that’s bringing fresh perspectives and pushing boundaries.” Founded in 2015, the OuterSpace Project is an annual event series that merges public art, live music, and action sports, transforming the city’s walls into open-air galleries. The project has added over 100 murals to Atlanta’s streets, cementing the city’s reputation as a destination for contemporary art and encouraging a deeper connection to public spaces.

The decision to expand ABV Gallery into East Atlanta is a deliberate one. Greg appreciates the neighbourhood’s eclectic spirit, which he sees as a natural fit for his brand of art. “East Atlanta has a unique, energetic vibe that aligns perfectly with the spirit of contemporary art,” he explains. “The neighbourhood’s creativity and sense of community make it an ideal spot for a gallery that wants to be deeply rooted in local culture.” For Greg, ABV Gallery is a way to contribute to the artistic pulse of East Atlanta, spotlighting the creativity and talent that make the city unique.

Atlanta’s character—its blend of historic charm and modern innovation—provides Greg with a constant source of inspiration. “The city’s vibrant street art, diverse culture, and tight-knit community are all deeply reflected in my work,” he says. “With its eclectic neighbourhoods, there’s a dynamic energy here that fuels my creativity and keeps my ideas fresh.” His work draws on Atlanta’s unique cultural mix, incorporating elements of pop culture, nostalgia, and Southern charm, all infused with a sense of playful surrealism.

When it comes to his favourite spots in Atlanta, he has a few recommendations. ABV Gallery is naturally at the top of the list, surrounded by local restaurants, bars, and shops that capture the East Atlanta vibe. For nightlife, Banshee is a favourite, with its vibrant atmosphere and local DJs. For dining, Argosy is a go-to, offering a diverse menu that reflects Atlanta’s cultural melting pot. And for live music, The Eastern is a venue he frequents, appreciating its contribution to the city’s dynamic music scene. “These spots capture the city’s energy and creativity,” he notes. “They’re quintessential for anyone wanting to experience Atlanta’s artistic and nightlife scenes.”

Atlanta’s blend of street art, music, and food has significantly shaped Greg’s creative approach. The city’s festivals and music scene, in particular, serve as constant sources of inspiration. “Music has a way of influencing the rhythm and mood of my art,” he explains. “The energy from local festivals gives me a sense of the community’s spirit and diversity, which I try to capture in my work.” His OuterSpace Project is an extension of this philosophy, blending art and culture to create an experience that is both local and universally accessible.

With ABV Gallery showcasing artists from around the world, Greg sees Atlanta as an emerging player on the global art map. “What sets Atlanta apart is its blend of Southern charm, rich cultural history, and a dynamic, evolving creative community,” he says. “While cities like New York and LA have their established art scenes, Atlanta offers a fresh perspective that’s deeply rooted in its neighbourhoods and community. It’s about more than just being seen; it’s about being part of something genuine and connected to the city’s roots.”

For those looking to experience Atlanta through his eyes, Greg suggests starting the day in East Atlanta Village, exploring the local murals and street art. After breakfast at a neighbourhood spot, a visit to ABV Gallery is essential, followed by a tour of the BeltLine and the vibrant murals of Cabbagetown. Lunch at Mary Mac’s Tea Room offers a taste of Southern comfort food, while Krog Street Market provides a range of local flavours. A trip to the High Museum or a live music set at a local venue rounds out the day. “The perfect day ends with a rooftop view of the city skyline,” he says. “Ladybird or the Clermont Lounge are ideal for taking in Atlanta’s vibe.”

As for aspiring artists, Greg’s advice is clear: “Stay true to your vision, keep creating, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Collaboration and community are key—connect with other artists, build relationships, and put your work out there.” For him, the path to success has been paved with a commitment to his unique style, a passion for public spaces, and a desire to push the boundaries of what art can accomplish.

In projects like the Deadmau5 helmet collaboration, he has found ways to blend his love for music and art, each helmet a canvas of bold colours and dynamic energy. His ambitious undertaking of transforming the ABV Gallery space has been equally rewarding, reflecting his dedication to creating a platform that elevates the experience of art for Atlanta’s community. It’s a project that underscores his belief in the power of art to connect people and reimagine the world around them.

Greg’s work is infused with a sense of nostalgia, using pop culture references to tap into shared memories and collective experiences. “It’s about reimagining the past through a contemporary lens,” he says. “Pop culture connects people, but it also opens the door to deeper themes of identity and culture.” His pieces invite viewers to engage with familiar elements in new ways, exploring how art can reflect both personal and shared histories.

Social media has also played a significant role in connecting him with his audience, offering a glimpse into his creative process and allowing him to engage with the art community on a global scale. “It’s a way to share my work in real-time and stay connected to the pulse of the art world,” he says. Through his murals, gallery exhibitions, and ongoing creative ventures, Greg Mike continues to shape the future of Atlanta’s art landscape, one vivid, surreal mural at a time.
