THE SLATE PHUKET: A HAVEN OF SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIAL LUXURY
THE SLATE – INDUSTRIAL DESIGNED LUXURY IN PHUKET
Paying homage to Phuket’s tin mining history The Slate artfully blends industrial style with traditional Thai aesthetics.
Discover The Slate: Industrial Chic Meets Thai Luxury in Phuket
Nestled on the quieter northwest coast, away from the bustling streets of Patong and the charm of the Old Town, the sprawling resort provides a serene retreat close to Sirinat National Park and stunning beaches, marrying modern industrial design with the natural splendour of its tropical surroundings.
Crafted by American architect Bill Bensley, The Slate fuses the region’s heritage with contemporary luxury. The hotel, resembling a small village, features meandering paths leading to the heart of the resort, the Black Ginger restaurant. Despite its size, it retains an intimate feel, with buggies at the ready for convenient transport.
Architectural Marvel: Exploring The Slate’s Design with Bill Bensley
Bensley’s innovative design is visible throughout The Slate, from strategically placed vintage suitcases to spaces that blend the industrial with the pastoral, alongside signature black and white stripes that adorn the pool areas.
The Slate stands out with its unique decor, drawing inspiration from Phuket’s tin mining era. The owners have meticulously incorporated industrial and steampunk elements, right down to the bespoke cutlery with their spanner-shaped finishings, and the mechanical moving fans in the Tongkha Kin Syndicate sports bar.
Luxury Accommodations: Rooms and Villas at The Slate
Featuring imaginative design, the rooms and villas at The Slate acknowledge the area’s industrial past. The villas, in particular, provide opulence with private pools, gardens, and butler service for those desiring the utmost in luxury.
Guests can choose from 185 stylish suites and lavish pool villas. The mid-range one-bedroom Pearl Shell Suite, spanning 132 sqm, defines luxury with its elegant wood and stone finishes, outdoor bathtub, and spacious balcony offering breathtaking views, and for our suite in block J, a peek at one of the three pools.
A Relaxing Getaway
Despite its proximity to the airport (a short ten-minute hop), it offers a tranquil haven, ideal for travellers seeking to unwind immediately upon arrival.
The Coqoon Spa, the epitome of relaxation, features ‘The Nest’ – a stunning private treatment room poised mid-air like a bird’s nest. For those seeking a rejuvenating workout, the fitness centre boasts a well-equipped gym, with yoga, pilates and Muay Thai classes.
Meanwhile, there are three pools to choose from; the larger Lagoon Pool for families and two just for adults. The Pulley Pool and Bar includes a swim-up bar with cocktails on offer and music played (not too loud) throughout the day. While the quiet Snakeskin Pool 3 is for the pure business of sunbathing and book reading.
Gastronomic Delights: Dining Experiences at The Slate
Dining at The Slate is a culinary journey. From the Michelin-recognised Black Ginger, accessible only by raft, to the hearty breakfasts at the Tin Mine and exquisite steaks at Rivet, every meal celebrates the flavours of Phuket. For a more informal snack and a beer the resort’s sports bar, Tongkha Kin Syndicate, will keep you entertained with its shelves of memorabilia and pool tables.
Black Ginger offers up a number of dining experiences but one of the best ways is to tackle the courses on the ‘Indulgent Phuket’ tasting menu. What appears like an overwhelming list of food is actually presented in perfectly-sized courses and gives diners a varied taste of Thai cuisine. The restaurant experience itself is a treat; from the moment you step through the blue-lit entrance to see the exotic flower display, to when you board the raft (hand pulled across the lake) and then step into the lantern-decorated, fiery-lit space – even the coolest of people can’t help but fire off a few snaps from their phone.
The service at Rivet is exemplary; while there is a chef’s tasting menu to choose from, the Tuna Ceviche appetiser on the main menu was too hard to resist. The dish is prepared in front of guests and includes a touch of Wasabi meaning you can request that sharp hit just at the point you like it. Choices from the Grill or Fish and Seafood include five sauces and sides giving you the opportunity to choose the tastes you favour most.
Sustainability at The Slate: Eco-Friendly Luxury Redefined
The Slate’s dedication to sustainability is woven into every aspect of its operation. From utilising natural materials in its construction to implementing ‘The Reverse Osmosis’ water treatment system, the resort showcases its commitment to environmental stewardship. Efforts include reducing plastic usage, offering biodegradable guest amenities, and ensuring that tours and operators support both environmental and social sustainability.
