To identify which areas are home to the most picture-perfect villages, Bankrate took to Instagram and assessed the number of hashtags for 100 rural locations dotted around the UK. From the tip of Scotland to every nook and cranny of Cornwall, we’ve found the prettiest villages to scope out for your next staycation.
Clovelly is the UK’s Most Instagrammable Village
Clovelly, a stunning harbour village in Devon, is the UK’s most Instagrammable village. It has been captured on Instagram 134,353 times. Portmeirion, an enchanting Italianate style village in Wales, is runner-up with 114,323 Instagram hashtags.
Castle Combe, a village within the Cotswolds Area of Natural Beauty in Wiltshire, is the third most Instagrammable village (99,641 hashtags.)
While lying in the lee of mysterious Mam Tor, locally known as the ‘Shivering Mountain’, Castleton follows (91,848 hashtags.)
Next, Grasmere, a village in the centre of the Lake District, takes its name from the adjacent lake and lands in the number 5 spot (87,367 hashtags.)
Wales
Portmeirion aside, Beddgelert, Snowdonia, and Porthdinllaen are among the most Instagrammable villages in Wales – with 22,055 and 5,816 hashtags on Instagram, respectively.
Scotland
The most photogenic villages in Scotland are Crail (26,834 hashtags), Fort Augustus (24,609 hashtags) and Plockton (14,569 hashtags.)
Northern Ireland
Over in Northern Ireland, Cushendun (7,258 hashtags) and Carnlough (6,928 hashtags) in County Antrim are among the most Instagrammable villages. While Groomsport in County Down is popular for pictures too, at 6,458 Instagram hashtags!
