SARASOTA: DISCOVER FLORIDA’S CULTURAL GEM
Sarasota: A Small City Big on Culture
If you’re a UK resident, thoughts of visiting Florida might immediately conjure images of colossal theme parks and a certain iconic mouse in Orlando, the art-deco marvels of South Beach Miami, or perhaps a leisurely ocean drive down to the laid-back vibes of Key West. With so much to explore, we’ve recently uncovered another gem to add to your list of must-visit Florida destinations.
Discovering Sarasota: Florida’s Cultural Coast
Sarasota, nestled in the Southwest and close to Tampa, is rapidly gaining recognition for its vibrant arts and culture scene, earning its title as Florida’s Cultural Coast. Despite its modest population (currently 56,003 and counting due to its growing reputation), this city stands out with a rich history steeped in performing arts. The credit for much of its cultural tapestry goes to John Ringling, the renowned circus magnate behind Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
John Ringling: The Legacy Behind Sarasota’s Arts Scene
An early proponent of the term Snowbird, Ringling initiated his winter retreat in Sarasota in 1912, eventually relocating the circus’s winter headquarters to this charming coastal town fifteen years later. More than a century on, his indelible mark on Sarasota’s arts community remains unparalleled. Virtually every arts organisation in Sarasota can trace its origins back to his pioneering leadership, underscoring his enduring influence and legacy.
Fast forward to the present day, and contemporary snowbirds are actively contributing to a cultural scene that exceeds expectations. A wave of philanthropy is sweeping across the city, generously supporting performers of various disciplines. The theatres, opera, and ballet all reap the benefits of affluent and cultured patrons, many of whom have made Sarasota their home, drawn by the allure of the year-round warm climate.
The Ringling: Where Art, Architecture and Nature Converge
A Sarasota visit is incomplete without immersing yourself in The Ringling, a cultural enclave boasting an art gallery, enchanting gardens, and the iconic Ca’ d’Zan residence.
The Ringling Museum of Art unveils an impressive array of European and American masterpieces, showcasing the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and El Greco, providing a captivating journey through art history. For lovers of the contemporary, the museum houses pieces by Florida artists like Robert Rauschenberg, John Chamberlain, and Syd Solomon. The collections extend to photography acquisitions and a distinctive wing, adorned with a jade-tinged terracotta facade, housing a captivating blend of ancient and contemporary Asian artworks, earthenware and porcelain.
The architectural marvel of The Ringling, including the Ca’ d’Zan mansion, is inspired by Venetian Gothic design and mirrors the opulent lifestyle of its previous owners, John and Mable Ringling. The expansive serene gardens are adorned with sculptures, fountains, and colourful flora, creating a seamless fusion of art and nature.
The visit is best completed by heading to the fun of the fair where a scale version of the Howard Bros Circus Model is a great way to learn just how magnificent and impressive the world of the travelling circus was with its huge menagerie of animals, acts and tents.
Sarasota Opera House: Passion and Performance in a Historic Setting
Sarasota Opera stands as a cultural haven for opera aficionados, occupying the splendid Sarasota Opera House. This institution showcases a repertoire that traverses the timeless masterpieces of Mozart and Verdi, as well as works by lesser-known composers, all set within the confines of a truly magnificent building.
A gem of architecture, the historic theatre, erected in 1926, radiates an aura of elegance and grandeur, effectively transporting audiences to the golden age of opera. Its intimate setting amplifies the immersive and captivating experience, where the sheer power of the human voice rightfully claims the spotlight.
The Opera House is also often used by the city’s ballet company for their performances giving ticket holders ample opportunity to enjoy the surroundings.
The Sarasota Ballet: Where classic dance meets contemporary style
Founded in 1987, The Sarasota Ballet has evolved into a prestigious resident ballet company seamlessly blending classical ballet techniques with contemporary artistry, offering a repertoire that captivates audiences with its diverse programming.
At the helm of The Sarasota Ballet is esteemed artistic director Iain Webb, originally from England, Iain assumed the role of director in 2007 and has since elevated the company’s profile through his visionary leadership and commitment to artistic excellence.
Continually pushing boundaries with inventive choreography and imaginative storytelling, works by renowned choreographers such as Sir Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, and Martha Graham are complemented by emerging choreographic voices that infuse fresh perspectives into the art form. This eclectic mix ensures that audiences are always on the edge of their seats, ready to be transported into different worlds of emotion and imagination.
The company’s cultural impact extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into the community. Through its extensive education and outreach programs it strives to make ballet accessible to all, sharing a love for the arts with future generations. Collaborations with local schools, community centres, and organisations have helped bridge gaps and showcase the universal language of dance.
We were lucky enough to attend the premiere of ‘Conflicted Beauty’ and although we are no way ballet connoisseurs, the dynamic experience left us hungry to experience more. This is lucky for us, as the company will be heading to London (with many of their local Sarasota fans following) from 4-9 June 2024 at the invitation of The Royal Ballet for a celebration of Sir Frederick Ashton at the Royal Opera House.
Exploring Sarasota’s Creative Scene: Galleries and Art Spaces
The city harbours a burgeoning independent art scene where artistic expression thrives. Alongside the world-class collection at the Ringling, there’s plenty to be discovered at the smaller galleries and art spaces.
Art Center Sarasota stands as a vital hub for creativity, boasting four curated galleries that showcase the artistic prowess of local and international talents. With engaging exhibitions that change every six weeks, this free-access centre sparks inspiration and challenges perceptions, fostering a deeper connection between art and community. During exhibition changeovers, the gardens themselves are a must-visit thanks to the range of outdoor sculptures that are worthy of a visit alone.
Art Ovation Hotel has integrated a gallery into its accommodation in Downtown Sarasota. Guests and the public can indulge in quarterly rotating exhibitions showcased in the hotel lobby whilst checking in or passing through. Near the bar, an artist residency space allows visitors to see creatives at work while a programme of events allows hotel residents and locals to be guided through evening workshops and cocktails.
The Bazaar on Apricot and Lime houses local artisans who sell their collectables and art from an indoor market. Over 40 local creators and curators call it home during Thursday, Friday, and Saturday’s year-round where live music, pop-up events and classes all take place. The area is colourful and peppered with bright street art and is only a 15-minute stroll from downtown.
Define is a newly opened independent store selling modern, contemporary art pieces produced by locals. Based on Palm Avenue, the street is becoming known as a little hub for indie art stores and gallery owners who are showcasing the work of locally-based Sarasota creatives. There’s also a very nice wine store and a great place to grab a glass of something cold to celebrate your latest art acquisition.
