PITTSBURGH: ART ON THE BANK
VisitPITTSBURGH, in collaboration with Greater Pittsburgh Art Council and Arts and Culture at Pittsburgh International Airport, is bringing together a collective of exclusive artworks by 12 Pittsburgh-based artists on London’s vibrant South Bank. Pittsburgh Art on the Bank is a multi-disciplinary showcase by well-known and emerging artists, offering an immersive presentation of the city’s diverse talent and artistry.
The week-long exhibit, taking place from 3 – 9 June, will also host to a number of interactive events, including a Q&A with Donald G. Warhola – nephew of Andy Warhol, who was born and raised in Pittsburgh – in addition to a series of silk-screen printing sessions using the technique of Warhol himself. Both activities are free and open to the public; all ages welcome.
The Q&A session with Donald G. Warhola will take place on Wednesday 5 June between 1-2pm on the lawn of the exhibition, giving the public the opportunity to ask questions and hear more about the life of Andy Warhol and the art scene in Pittsburgh.
Warhola is Vice President of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and its Liaison to The Andy Warhol Museum, where he works in the education department as a Warhola family historian. He serves as a board member on the Foundation’s Board of Directors as well as Chairman of its Audit Committee. A nephew of Andy Warhol, Warhola is the son of his middle brother, the late John Warhola. In 1986, after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Computer Science and Business, Warhola travelled to New York City to work for his uncle to install a network computer system for Andy Warhol Enterprises, Inc. Warhola earned a Master of Arts in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh and followed to work in community mental health for 10 years as a child and adolescent therapist. Currently, Warhola works with children who have special mental health needs whilst living in Cranberry Township, PA, with his wife Jarka and son Andrew. Spaces to the Q&A are limited, so free tickets need to be secured in advance here.
Silk-screening sessions will be available on 8 and 9 June, between 11am-2pm and 4-7pm on Saturday and 12-4pm on Sunday. Ticket holders will have the chance to explore Andy Warhol’s signature technique and take away an iconic print on a complimentary tote bag. Spaces can be booked here. There will also be a limited number of walk-in spaces available for both.
The week-long showcase coincides with British Airways centenary celebrations follows last month’s launch of the year-round direct service to Pittsburgh from London Heathrow. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will also have the opportunity to win a five-night trip for two to Pittsburgh and admission to a selection of the city’s top museums. To enter, visitors must share a selfie with their favourite piece of art on Instagram using the bespoke hashtag #PITartonthebank.
