PATCH & THE GIANT: PLAYLIST: Acclaimed indie-folk quintet Patch & The Giant have just released their long awaited debut album, ‘All That We Had, We Stole’,
Produced by Nick Trepka, whose credits include Emmy The Great and Mercury Prize Winner Speech Debelle, ‘All That We Had, We Stole’ is a polished and accomplished debut. Showcasing Patch & The Giant’s eclectic take on folk music, the album effectively harnesses elements of indie, rock and blues and fuses them with inviting story-telling, courtesy of lead singer Luke Owen’s rich and tender vocals, and a unique instrumentation ‘Tucked somewhere between the music of Balkan enthusiasts Beirut and the rustic elegance of modern DIY folk’ says Folk Radio UK.
To celebrate the release of ‘All That We Had, We Stole’ Patch & The Giant have made us a playlist of some of their favourite songs.
1. Benedict Benjiman // My Feet Have No Need For The Ground
Formerly lead singer Brighton-based The Mariner’s Children. This is a wonderful debut solo album – curious, passionate and a very driven sound. Timeless sounding songs that just really really work. Hope we hear more soon.
2. Andrew Butler // Fiona
One of our very dear friends – Butler’s songwriting is sublime. The world deserves to know him.
3. Oliver Hoare & The Late Great // Love Is
We played some of our earliest gigs with these guys and they’ve changed their name about 717 times but they’re just so damn good. Don’t know why they’re not huge.
4. Hoodman Blind
Great progressive trad band Derek saw recently, so refreshing. Promising talent comprised of students of the Limerick school of music.
5. True Adventures // North Atlantic Ocean
We met Sam whilst playing on the same bill together at a gig… brilliant guy, brilliant songs. This one especially. He’s also supporting us for a couple of dates during the album tour.
6. We Used To Make Things // Love In A Minor Key
Fate brought us together with WUTM, they’re some of our favourite people, a wonderful, talented and diverse collection of songwriters and musicians. They just released their debut album.
7. Aidan O’Rourke + Kit Downes 365 project
It’s a project based in response to James Robertson’s short story collection 365 where he wrote a short story of 365 words each day for a year. By the end of February 2017, all going well, they’ll have 365 new tunes!
8. Nick Edward Harris // Trying To Be Silent
Eagle-eyed viewers may notice that Nick is in fact our bassist… but he hasn’t always been and he’s been Nick Edward Harris for longer and his music deserves to be shared far and wide.
9. Resina // Flock
Organic compositions that appear to come from nowhere, cello evolution!
10. Boat To Row // As The Day Is Long
Birmingham locals and favoured musical comrades. Delicately beautiful songs, weaving away at your soul.
11. Clara Tracey // Papillons
Dublin based songwriter, sprinkles of Yann Tiersen, delicate haunting melodies.
12. Blake Mills // Don’t Tell Your Friends About Me
Blake Mills is a fascinating and somehow still under a lot of radars. We want more of his music. We always want more.
13. Joseinne Clarke & Ben Walker // Something Familiar
Another act we’re very happy to have some shared history with. Enormous talent in these two and they’ve recently been signed to Rough Trade.
14. King Creosote // Wake Up To This
We expect to be listening to his newest album a lot in 2017.
15. Sam Airey // Floodgates
Deserves to be be much more well known.
16. Matthew & The Atlas // Elijah
An act which has been around for a few years and always remained pleasantly slightly under the radar. He’s toured with some huge names and has some great musical accolades in his own right but deserves to be even bigger.
17. James Canty // Putney Bridge
He’s played with pretty amazing people recently (he supported Sigur Ros last year)… this guy is great. Really hope we see much much more of him.
