MY CITY: EDINBURGH BY MIKE HUGHES

MY CITY: EDINBURGH BY MIKE HUGHES

Illustrator Mike Hughes has just relocated to Edinburgh after spending 8 years in Aberdeen. His vibrant, colourful work is influenced by his love of skateboarding culture. We asked him to be our tour guide around the beautiful city of Edinburgh for a day; picking out his favourite places and sharing his tips.

What would be your perfect day in Edinburgh?

Being so new here every day can be a bit of an adventure. Something like a cycle around the city on some of it’s amazing hidden cycle tracks followed by lunch or dinner at one of it’s independent cafe’s or restaurants. Check out a gallery or two, Ingleby and Fruitmarket are always worth a visit. Followed up by some drinks and try not to get too out of hand.

What’s the best music venue?

I would be tempted to say Sneaky Pete’s for the consistent great energy however I’m just as happy in any old man bar getting some good Folk vibes.

The best hidden secret / undiscovered gem about the City?

I’m most taken by the contrast in people. From tourist’s, hardened local’s, affluent university goers and the most amazing unplaceable wild characters. So much material for drawing I’m spoiled.

What is your favourite bar/s?

The Basement Bar on Broughton street has been a nice chilled out spot for us so far. Good food, friendly staff and a cool interior make for a good vibe.

Favourite clothes / culture shop?

Focus on the The Royal Mile has been an important player in the Scottish skateboard scene for as long as I can remember. With the ease of online shopping it’s always important to remember to support the stores who have been active in your community. Support your local kids.

What made you move to Edinburgh?

A combination of things. It’s a beautiful place, it’s positioned well on our small island. It has a thriving art scene and you can get a good burger. What’s not to like?

Favourite neighbourhood?

We are currently in Newtown, which is a lovely place, but it’s all about Leith. Looking forward to getting down that end of town. Some amazing things happening with lots of groups putting on events in the local art and music scene.

Where do you head for a late night drink?

My favourite spot so far has been Paradise Palms, one of the best interiors I’ve ever seen. Fear and loathing meets Kitsch. Has to be seen to be believed.

Best takeaway?

I would probably grab a burrito from Pinto’s but you’re best dining out here. Burger Meet’s Bun is a Must.

Best place to meet like-minded souls?

Well Bristo Square was the Mecca for street skateboarder’s and crazies alike, but sadly it’s being regenerated. Saughton skatepark is the next best bet but you need to be ready to dodge some scooter kids. The best thing to do for creatives is to speak to local independents to find out about events. Spectrum paint shop just held a jam where Scotland’s finest painters smashed out their new legal wall. Leith late are very active putting on gigs, film screenings and more.

What song, book or movie sums up Edinburgh for you?

I’d have to say Filth, it’s by no means a sum up of how I feel about the city. There are no rose tinted 3D glasses for that film. It’s incredibly dark Scottish humour. Filmed on location in Edinburgh it paints the city in a dark light but it’s brilliance is too much to pass up.
