JE SUIS CRABBI: PLAYLIST
Pop Will Eat Itself frontman Graham Crabb has a new project. Here he picks a few records that have influenced Je Suis Crabbi.
“The Je Suis Crabbi project I’m now doing has a penchant for a ‘cheeky’ lyric, shall we say – here the line between anti-social comment and wit blurs. It’s edgy, man. Inspiration comes from the aggression of punk rock, all-out hedonism, heart of darkness poetry and just clever, biting satire. These are some of my favourites that I’m sure have subconsciously influenced my writing”
Sisters of Mercy: Temple of Love
…’and the Devil in a black dress watches over. My guardian angel walks away. Life is short and love is always over in the morning. Black wind come carry me far away’.
Sleaford Mods: Jobseeker
This is less of a song and more a film-waiting-to-happen. Asked what he’d been doing to seek gainful employment; “Fuck all. Sat around the house, wanking. And I want to know why you can’t get coffee here. My signing on time is ten past 11. It’s now nearly 12 o’clock and some of you strange bastards need executing!”
Dead Kennedys: Kill The Poor:
Behold the sparkle of champagne, the crime rate’s gone, feel free again
O’ life’s a dream with you, Miss Lily White
Jane Fonda on the screen today, convinced the liberals it’s okay
So let’s get dressed and dance away the night
Happy Mondays: Kinky Afro
“Son, I’m 30, I only went with your mother cos she’s dirty
And I don’t have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see”
The Specials: Stereotypes (Part 2)
“I don’t drink no beer, I don’t drink no something called whiskey ’cause I don’t wanna feel so frisky
All I smoke is my herbs, herbs and my stereo
Things get from bad to worse I can’t even walk down the street
I don’t feel at ease because what they call me, they call me the stereotype
I don’t need no speed to make me go fast. Just give me little 45 and 33
Buy me stereo, I want to be free, stereo. I, I, I’m a stereotype”
The Stranglers: Ugly
“I guess I shouldn’t have strangled her to death, but I had to go work and she’d laced my coffee with acid. Normally I wouldn’t have minded, but I’m allergic to sulphuric acid. Besides, she had acne. And if you’ve got acne, well….”.
Portobella: Covered in Punk
“Oh look at me, I’m covered in punk, Covered in new wave, covered in you.
Oh look at me, I’m covered in punk, all over the radio, over you.
Oh look at me, you’ve covered your face, covered in the moment, Covered in lace.
Oh see me now, I’m bucking like a broncho, Eat your candy, eat your candy”.
The The: Good Morning Beautiful
“Now some of you may live and some of you may die,
But remember, that nothing in the world can kill you inside
For he is thinking of you. In your great cities of great solitude
Oh children you’ve still got a lot to fuckin’ learn
The only path to heaven is via hell
Good morning beautiful, good bye world”
The Jam: Wasteland:
“And there amongst the shit, the dirty linen, the holy coca-cola tins, the punctured footballs, the ragged dolls, the rusting bicycles, we’ll sit and probably hold hands, and watch the rainfall, tumble and fall, like our lives…exactly like our lives”
LCD Soundsystem: Losing My Edge
“I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids. I played it at CBGB’s. Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know. I was there. I was there. I’ve never been wrong…..
But I’m losing my edge to better-looking people with better ideas and more talent.
And they’re actually really, really nice”.
Black Submarine: Black Submarine
“This is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine, this is a black submarine”
