INTRODUCING THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MAP OF BIRMINGHAM
International Women’s Day celebrates women’s rights on the 8th of March every year, falling also in women’s history month, there are more women’s rights-themed events held around this time each year.
This year the second city has done us proud – there are a plethora of events happening across the weekend of 7 and 8 March right here in Birmingham.
If you haven’t heard of us, Slag Mag is a locally based arts and music zine, who have curated the first ever International Women’s Day map of Birmingham, showcasing Birmingham’s celebration of women and non-binary people on the weekend of 7 and 8 March.
The map, designed by Supersonic Festival’s Rosie Tunley, features events centred in Digbeth and Birmingham City Centre which focus on art, music and empowerment of women and non-binary people including events from map-creators Slag Mag and Supersonic Festival.
Slag Mag, standing for the Serious Ladies of Art and Gigs, host our next magazine fundraiser at The Night Owl on Saturday, March 7th. The all-day event features live music from Harry Jordan, Namiwa Jazz, Low Red Moon, The Bitter Lemons and Redmoon, along with live poetry, DJs and an arts market all fundraising for Slag Mag’s next issue.
Noted as “The UK’s best small festival” by The Guardian, Supersonic hosts an annual experimental music and arts festival with international acts. Their International Women’s Day Celebration showcases eccentric local acts including industrious beat laden AJA, thrash punk Pretty Grim and art pop act Sofa King at Digbeth’s Centrala on Saturday, March 7th.
The map also features Soul Sisters club night at The Night Owl, Birmingham, Solihull Women’s Aid fundraiser at The Sunflower Lounge, Coming into Creativity Workshops at Alphaworks, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s IWD Festival, Comedy of Black Origin Comedy Shutdown at The Glee Club and an International Women’s Day Workshop at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
International Women’s Day, originating in early 20th century through campaigns for women’s right to vote, is a celebration of the successes and achievements of women, female identifying and non-binary people, as well as an open invitation to discuss discrimination and challenges still fervent in society. These events in Birmingham intend to empower, teach and create a dynamic space for those who may not have one any other time.
