DISCOVERING THE MAGIC OF DOROTHY CIRCUS GALLERY WITH ALEXANDRA MAZZANTI

Alexandra Mazzanti, founder of Dorothy Circus Gallery, has been a trailblazer in the art world since the gallery’s inception in 2007. Inspired by a transformative journey to the USA, she has dedicated her career to showcasing the masterpieces of pop surrealism and supporting female artists. In this exclusive interview, Mazzanti shares her insights on her journey, the evolution of surrealism, and her exciting new project in Venice.

Alexandra Mazzanti: A Journey in the Art World

Can you tell us about your journey in the art world and what inspired you to establish Dorothy Circus Gallery?

Dorothy Circus Gallery began as a magical revolution in 2007 in Rome, inspired by a passionate journey to the USA. At that time, the art world was dominated by flat, conceptual, and abstract forms that no longer resonated with contemporary feelings. My mother and I discovered the masterpieces of pop surrealism pioneers like Mark Ryden, Joe Sorren, and Marion Peck. We were captivated by their ability to merge historical techniques with contemporary themes, creating powerful and beautiful paintings. This discovery ignited a profound need to give these works a home, leading to the establishment of Dorothy Circus Gallery. Since then, we have celebrated the resurgence of surrealism, witnessing its evolution beyond the label of Pop Surrealism, as it continues to shape the contemporary art landscape.

You have been a dedicated champion of female artists like Fatima Ronquillo, Afarin Sajedi, Marion Peck, and Miss Van. What draws you to their work?

My focus on female artists has always been an instinctive response to the noticeable absence of feminine visual language in art. This stems from my long-standing study of female artists from the past, creating a profound sense of alignment with their artistic visions. Femininity in art, whether as a muse or creator, has been a central theme in my mother’s collection and my visual imagination. Taking this perspective broadens the understanding of femininity’s influence on art, enriching the cultural dialogue. I am drawn to the powerful messages these artists convey through their work, challenging traditional masculine ideals and offering a rich, profound, introspective, and emotive visual language.

How do you select the artists you represent, and what do you look for in their art?

Selecting artists for Dorothy Circus Gallery is a deeply personal and emotional process. I give priority to artists whose works resonate on an emotional level. I seek out those who can weave contemporary narratives infused with the deeper meanings and histories of humanity’s past, echoing timeless sentiments while still feeling entirely fresh and original. The artists I choose must create a heartfelt connection, fostering a community of enthusiasts who share inspiring and formative experiences.

The Allure of Surrealism and Pop Surrealism

What is it about Surrealism and Pop Surrealism that captivates you?

Surrealism and Pop Surrealism captivate me because they merge historical techniques with contemporary themes, creating a powerful narrative that resonates deeply with modern audiences. These genres delve into the subconscious, exploring themes of memory, dreams, and the fantastical. They offer a refreshing counter to the abstract and conceptual forms that once dominated the art world, celebrating refined technique and true talent. The ever-evolving nature of these movements continues to inspire and captivate, as they push the boundaries of artistic expression.

How do you see these genres evolving, and what role does Dorothy Circus Gallery play in their development?

I see Surrealism and Pop Surrealism continuing to evolve, breaking free from conventional labels and expanding into new, uncharted territories. Dorothy Circus Gallery plays a crucial role in this evolution by providing a platform for these artists to showcase their work and reach a broader audience. We celebrate the ongoing dialogue between historical techniques and contemporary themes, fostering an environment where these movements can thrive and evolve. Our gallery is dedicated to supporting and nurturing these genres, ensuring their continued relevance and impact in the art world.

MDG Foundation and Museum in Venice

We’re excited to hear about your new Foundation and Museum in Venice. What inspired this project?

The MDG Foundation and Museum in Venice are inspired by a desire to bridge the past with the future, exploring the symbology and themes of humanity through art. The foundation is named after my mother, whose memory and influence continue to shape my journey. This project aims to create a “cultural salon” that celebrates modern sentiment and fosters an immersive experience. Venice, with its enchanting beauty, provides the perfect backdrop for this endeavor, offering visitors a unique opportunity to engage with art in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Can you give us an exclusive insight into what visitors can expect at this new museum?

Visitors to the MDG Foundation and Museum in Venice can expect an enchanting experience that celebrates the theme of Memory and its eternity. The museum will feature a collection of works that bridge the past with the future, exploring the symbology and themes of humanity. An entire salon will be dedicated to femininity, showcasing the language and secrets of the Muse, both past and present. Our aim is to encourage visitors to put down their phones and engage with the art in a non-virtual, sensory-rich environment, rediscovering the magic that Venice has to offer.

How will the location within the Piano Nobile of a historic palazzo in Venice enhance the visitor experience?

The Piano Nobile of a historic palazzo in Venice provides a stunning and historically rich setting for the MDG Foundation and Museum. This location enhances the visitor experience by offering a unique blend of architectural beauty and cultural heritage. The palazzo’s historic charm and grandeur create an immersive atmosphere that complements the themes of Memory and Synesthesia explored in our collections. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with art in a space that itself tells a story, adding depth and context to their experience.

What are your thoughts on the issues Venice is facing with over-tourism, and talk of an entrance fee to the City?

Over-tourism in Venice is a significant concern, as it threatens the delicate balance of the city’s cultural and environmental heritage. While an entrance fee might help manage the influx of tourists and generate funds for preservation efforts, it is also crucial to implement measures that protect the city’s unique character and support the local community. Our foundation aims to contribute positively by encouraging responsible tourism and offering visitors an opportunity to engage with Venice in a meaningful and respectful way.

Impact of the New Foundation and Museum

How do you hope the new Foundation and Museum will impact the art community and the broader public?

The MDG Foundation and Museum aim to create a space where the art community and the broader public can come together to explore and celebrate the themes of Memory, femininity, and modern sentiment, discovering beautiful works of art and their full meaning, regardless of whether the artists are famous masters or not. We invite our audience to take time to study and look carefully at one work, one by one, rather than to “consume” a large number of works. We hope to foster a deeper appreciation for the arts, encouraging visitors to engage with our collections on an emotional and intellectual level, and most importantly, to learn how to experience deeply a work of art beyond the canvas space.

One of our main goals is to collaborate with art experts and historians to bring back to life the very moment when the artwork was created. We want our exhibitions to act as a Time Machine, retrieving memories from the past. By offering a captivating and engaging experience, we aspire to inspire and educate, promoting a renewed interest in the cultural and historical significance of art.

What are your long-term goals for both Dorothy Circus Gallery and the new Venice project?

We aim to continue our mission of discovering new talents and further establishing the prime movers of the new surrealism scene. However, Dorothy Circus Gallery (DCG) and the MDG Foundation will have distinct identities and roles within the art world.

The committee at the MDG Foundation will adopt a broad vision of the artistic landscape, involving collaborations with other institutions and art galleries to offer a lively and diverse program. Meanwhile, DCG will focus on the latest trends in contemporary art, differentiating its programs between Rome and London. Each location will have a uniquely characteristic curatorial approach, reflecting the distinctive cultural and artistic dynamics of their respective cities.

How has your work with the gallery and your new project in Venice influenced your personal view on art and its role in society?

Beginning this new project and embarking on this new adventure has significantly inspired me to further my research into the arts. It has provided me with the opportunity to study, learn, and explore new connections. When I started, I was uncertain whether I would have the energy to pursue such an ambitious project, especially after 19 years of intense dedication to gallery work and my simultaneous commitment as a mother of three. Starting from scratch with this enormous idea has been challenging, yet incredibly enriching and rewarding. As the saying goes, “chi si ferma è perduto” – those who stand still are lost. The same applies to art; it must continue its motion and influence society, especially during these dark times.

What advice would you give to aspiring curators and gallery owners, especially women, who are looking to make their mark in the art world?

To aspiring curators and gallery owners, especially women, my advice is to remain true to your vision and passion. Be collaborative and strive to create a network by connecting with other galleries. Seeking personal visibility and ego gratification is pointless; there is so much that can be achieved as an art community!
