DESI PUBS OF THE BLACK COUNTRY
The classic English pub in the Black Country region of the UK is coming in for a fair bit of competition from our Desi friends who have been buying up closed, dilapidated and unloved Inns for the past couple of decades and turning them in to local hubs serving up great Indian food, with more than a healthy dose of warmth and charm. Many of the pubs have been instrumental in bringing previously fractured communities together under the guise of great nosh and a beer.
To celebrate their contribution to the pub landscape and to tell the stories of the landlords who have been so crucial in their success, Creative Black Country, have produced a beautiful risograph printed catalogue that charts the histories of those involved in the pubs and the people that frequent them.
“The Desi Pub catalogue is a bold collection of personal stories inviting the reader to experience the colourful and courageous characters of the seven landlords who have pioneered the Desi Pub phenomena in the Black Country.” Comments the creative team behind the catalogue. “The publication is influenced by each of the landlord’s personal documentation, paper scrapbooks and plastic folders dedicated to memorabilia and photo archives from the 60’s through to the 90’s. You can also get a glimpse into the pubs today and the beautiful pub artwork created by local artists.”
Produced in collaboration with Rope Press in Birmingham the 152-page catalogue, which has a gold foil cover detail and is perfect bound, is a limited edition with only 1,000 copies in circulation. The catalogue also includes an illustrated desi pub map to help you plan your pub crawl.
The pubs have helped shape bespoke creations which capture the heart and soul of each venue and their punters. Portraits, stained glass windows, photography, mosaics, and handcrafted pub signs have been produced for permanent display in each pub. This collection is part of an ongoing body of work produced by Creative Black Country that includes an archive, broadcasts and now a beautiful publication.
