DARKEST BEFORE DAWN: NORDIC CONTEMPORARY
Showing five contemporary Danish, Finnish and Norwegian artists presenting new interpretations of paintings and sculptures. This is the first exhibition in a newly renovated 60m2 gallery situated in the vibrant 10th arrondissement, close to Republique, Paris.
When everything is down, up still exists. The exhibition is about a certain set of logic based around questions of hope, the unconscious action, a push of force towards something new: An identity, a material, a world?
The title of the exhibitions is taken from the quote ‘The darkest hour is just before the dawn’, a proverb first recorded by English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller in 1650.
The works, just as the title of the exhibition, are justified by duality, dystopian at the same time full of possibilities in an almost meta physical belief. Or as Harvey Dent says in The Dark Knight, ‘I promise you, the Dawn is coming.
The exhibition attempts to break down hierarchies. High culture meets low culture, polished meets raw, natural meets clinical in an eclectic brew that aims to clash more than to harmonize; yet somehow linked through the artists’ view, set against the backdrop of the dark Nordic cultural history at its meeting point with the modern urban being. The opening is activated by a live performance which further interacts with the artworks and the space itself creating an experience where all connections are made visible as a whole.
A full color catalogue is produced in conjunction with the exhibition. NORDIC CONTEMPORARY is an art space founded in 2014 by Andreas Emenius and Jacob Valdemar. In 2018 it became a gallery situated in a newly renovated 60m2 gallery situated in the vibrant 10th arrondissement, close to Republique, Paris.
