COMMON THIRD: NAVIGATING THE COMPLEXITIES OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
Whether we realise it or not, the culture we come from plays heavily into our identity. Understanding one culture is tricky but how do people of one or more cultures navigate the complexities of their cultural heritage?
Common Third develop debate on this by understanding the points of connection that exist between people born of one culture and living in another.
Held at Copperfield, London and featuring the work of 13 artists. The exhibition aims to create a common ground for many who find themselves as a combination of multiple cultures and ethnicities in a period of time where politics throughout the Western world is characterised by separation and division.
In order to provide a range of perspectives a number of curators, writers, artists and collectors have been invited, such as photographer David Bailey and British Council curator Ying Tan. All of those invited have contributed to this unique and thoughtful exhibition in a number of ways.
Other than referencing the concept of the Third Culture and Homi K. Bhabha’s ‘Third Space’ the title of the exhibition nods to the pedagogical practice of the same name for it’s aim to create greater trust and understanding through shared activity.
In line with the exhibition’s theme of open discussion and communication, more information can be found in a transcription of an online interview on the Copperfield website. This discussion between people of multiple cultures highlights just how beneficial finding common ground is and the complex importance of culture on human beings.
Common Third will open 12th September and run from 13th September – 26th October 2018, Wednesday – Saturday, 12 – 6pm at Copperfield, 6 Copperfield Street, London SE1 0EP.
