BEN JAVENS:: EYE CANDY COMMISSION. For our visual pop culture event EYE CANDY Fused commissioned Birmingham artist and illustrator Ben Javens to produce a new installation.
BEN JAVENS is known for his distinctive style which combines bold colours and playful characters and a sense of humour, while also exploring deeper themes such as identity and human connection.
Ben has created work for a range of clients including The New York Times, The Guardian, Google and The Washington Post. He has also collaborated on projects with companies such as Adidas, Converse, and Vans. In 2016, he was awarded the D&AD Next Illustrator Award.
.Some of his notable works include the children’s book “The Happy Sun”, which he both wrote and illustrated, and the cover design for the book “How to be Happy” by Eva Woods. He has also created a range of prints, cards, and other merchandise featuring his illustrations.
The new wall piece has been produced on wood, hand cut by Ben and painted in Cyan, Magenta, Black and White then assembled on a wall in Birmingham’s Arcadian Centre in the Southside district of the city.
“We’ve wanted to commission a piece with Ben ever since Eye Candy started four years ago,” comments Kerry O’Coy, one of the curator’s of the annual event. “We are always looking for the right spaces to match with the right artist. Getting the fit can take some time but on this occasion it worked perfectly. Ben’s signature style has been installed in large-scale and it’s had a great response from the Arcadian’s owners”.
You can go and see the piece on the ground floor of the Arcadian outside of Ladbrokes.
