A POSTCARD FROM CORNELIUS: INSIDER GUIDE TO TOKYO

A POSTCARD FROM CORNELIUS – INSIDER GUIDE TO TOKYO

As someone who was born and raised in Tokyo, my music has been deeply influenced by the city’s vibrant and ever-evolving culture. Growing up here in the 1980s, I was immersed in an era of booming economic growth and cultural development. Tokyo was alive with creativity, and I absorbed the eclectic mix of art, music, and cultural innovations that surrounded me. This period left an indelible mark on my artistic journey, and the city remains a constant source of inspiration.

One neighbourhood that has profoundly influenced my work is Shibuya. During my teenage years, Shibuya was the cultural epicentre of Tokyo. It was a place where small record stores, eclectic clothing shops, and buzzing live music venues coexisted. Though urban development has since transformed the area, the memories of Shibuya in the 1980s and 1990s continue to inspire me. It was here that I discovered my passion for music and art, which has fueled my creative endeavours ever since.

When it comes to unwinding and finding tranquillity in the bustling city, I often retreat to the neighbourhoods of Setagaya, Jiyugaoka, Komazawa, and Ikejiri. These areas offer a more relaxed atmosphere, away from the throngs of tourists and busy city streets. I love their quieter charm and laid-back vibe, which provide the perfect backdrop for reflection and relaxation.

I’m not a fan of crowded places or trendy hotspots. Instead, I gravitate toward old-fashioned coffee shops and cafes that exude a sense of nostalgia. Something is comforting about sitting among older patrons, savouring a cup of Wiener coffee—a uniquely Japanese creation with cream on top—and enjoying the unhurried pace of these establishments.

Tokyo is a city teeming with cultural treasures, and there are a few spots that hold a special place in my heart. One of them is the VIVA STRANGE BOUTIQUE in Jiyugaoka and Okusawa. This store, run by a dear friend, specialises in post-punk from the 1970s and 1980s, making it a true gem for music lovers seeking rare finds. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in a unique musical journey, one that is hard to find elsewhere.

For music enthusiasts, Tokyo offers a wealth of venues and record stores that cater to every taste. One of my favourites is Big Love Records in Harajuku, managed by an old friend. The store’s eclectic selection and intimate atmosphere make it a go-to spot for discovering new music. Additionally, I recommend exploring Ross Upson in Koenji and Disc Union for an extensive collection of second-hand records, each with its own story to tell.

While Tokyo may not be known for its historical sites, I believe it still has hidden gems worth exploring. Although Kyoto holds a greater allure for historical landmarks, a visit to Nanzenji Temple is a must. The serene setting and the opportunity to enjoy tofu with a stunning view make it a worthwhile excursion from Tokyo.

For those visiting Tokyo for the first time, I encourage you to venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Roppongi. Instead, explore the local neighbourhoods that offer an authentic and less commercialised experience of the city. These areas reveal the true essence of Tokyo, where you can immerse yourself in the daily rhythms of life and discover the beauty in the ordinary.

I invite you to join me as we explore the city that has shaped my music and my life. From the vibrant streets of Shibuya to the tranquil corners of Setagaya, Tokyo is a place of endless possibilities and inspiration. Let’s uncover the hidden gems, savour the flavours, and embrace the creativity that makes Tokyo a city like no other.
