ZOE MORE O’FERRALL: MY LONDON
Illustrator Zoe More O’Ferrall is behind this year’s beautiful Christmas campaign for accessories retailer Radley. Starring the brands own Scottie dog, Radley (naturally), Zoe’s signature line-drawn style features a range of festive scenes that have been brought to life with 2&3D in-store point of sale and window displays.
Using her large collection of pens and pencils Zoe draws everything by hand, recently expanding her set of tools to include painting with inks that adds a new aesthetic to her distinctive work which has been commissioned by countless cool brands and magazines.
She took on Radley’s Christmas brief earlier in the year:
“They had a wonderful brief from the outset, the visions they had for the stills sets and windows were immediately engaging and they encouraged me to be playful with it.” Comments Zoe. “Coming up with the dog themed book names for the bookcase was a lot of fun… 50 Shades of Greyhound being my favourite!”
Based in Notting Hill, London we asked Zoe to guide us around her favourite places in the capital city. “I’ve lived all over London but Notting Hill is my favourite pocket of the city. I’m based along the Golborne antiques market and a stone’s throw from Portobello Road. There are lots of independent shops and restaurants and market stalls which makes for a really lively, ever evolving environment.”
What would be your perfect day in Notting Hill?
Friday is market day and so the area buzzes with stalls and the like. I love waking up early and walking with a coffee round the market as it comes to life before I sit down to work for the day.
What’s the best music venue?
I’m not far from Shepherds Bush Empire which is my favourite venue to see bands. It’s pretty small compared to most other London venues so always feels intimate and is a millions miles from a Stadium or Arena.
The best hidden secret / undiscovered gem about Notting Hill?
Lisboa Patisserie on Golborne Road makes the best custard tarts I’ve ever had. People come from miles to have a taste. It’s a Portuguese institution that hasn’t changed in the decades it’s been there.
Which are your favourite bars?
The Cow in Westbourne Park is a perfect cosy winter spot but I love a rooftop in (the short lived) London summer, especially Franks in Peckham.
Your favourite coffee shop?
I am wonderfully close to the best coffee I can find in London at Golborne Deli, along with giant salads and pastries that are a great aid to busy drawing days.
Favourite shop?
My friend owns a shop called Phoenix on Golborne which is filled with beautiful furniture, finds and more recently some of the best vintage I can get my hands on.
Favourite neighbourhood?
Besides from this area, I only recently discovered Lambs Conduit Street which feels quintessentially English, lined with beautiful independent shops with a hint of Dickensian London thrown in. I’m a big fan.
What is your favourite gallery or artistic space?
The National Portrait Gallery. Followed by a cup of tea up on the top floor that has a view across London rooftops that feels more like you’re in Paris than London.
Where do you head for a late night drink?
Lisa’s on Portobello Road.
Best takeaway?
Eat Tokyo sushi in Notting Hill Gate.
What song, book or movie sums up your neighbourhood for you?
Van Morrison’s song Slim Slow Slider which is set in Ladbroke Grove.
