THE COTTAGE IN THE WOOD, MALVERN: A SERENE COUNTRY ESCAPE

THE COTTAGE IN THE WOOD, MALVERN: A SERENE COUNTRY ESCAPE

Nestled within eight acres of lush woodland, The Cottage in the Wood offers more than just a scenic escape – it’s also home to the celebrated 1919 Restaurant. Perched high above Malvern, this charming retreat seamlessly combines relaxed homeliness with exquisite dining, making it a standout destination for food enthusiasts seeking both tranquility and a touch of unfussy indulgence.

A Culinary Panorama at 1919 Restaurant

At the heart of The Cottage in the Wood is the 1919 Restaurant, a culinary gem boasting a coveted 3 AA Rosettes. With sweeping views of the Cotswolds, Vale of Evesham and Severn Valley, the setting alone is worth the visit.

Its interiors feature calming pale-grey walls, woodland inspired wallpapers, and floor-to-ceiling French doors that in summer open to the spectacular views, creating an inviting atmosphere that is both intimate and elegant. On our Saturday evening visit, the room was lively yet relaxing, and to our delight, we bumped into old friends from Birmingham—a testament to the hotel’s popularity among weekenders from the Midlands.

However, it’s the food that truly steals the show. The restaurant’s tasting menu is a masterclass in seasonal, locally-sourced cuisine, offering a dynamic and evolving exploration of Worcestershire’s finest ingredients.

The seven-course tasting menu (£85pp) offers up meticulously crafted dishes to showcase the region’s rich culinary heritage. Diners can expect an ever-changing array of plates, where the freshest produce takes centre stage. From delicate starters that tease the palate to hearty mains that satisfy even the most discerning gourmands.

A Feast for the Senses

The tasting menu begins with a selection of amuse-bouches that set the tone for the meal—a playful introduction that hints at the delights to come. We particularly loved the melted cheese puff that fired up the tastebuds from the start. As the courses progress, diners are treated to a medley of flavours and textures, each dish a testament to the chefs’ creativity and skill.

Sourdough, with cultured butter and sprinkled with herbs, and the smooth cod roe emulsion topped with caviar is a perfect way to kickstart the meal. It’s followed be a bowl of mulled wine beetroot that includes mini piles of goats curd, tiny linseed crackers and a red cabbage gazpacho.

We enjoyed the unusual combination of the Mackerel satay with cucumber that was sprinkled with macadamia nuts.

The Ham hock terrine with pickles served on a bed of fine bean salad was probably our least favourite of the dishes (but I’m not a fan of ham hock as a rule so that’s more on me than the chef), however this was soon surpassed by a succulent piece of locally-sourced venison, perfectly paired with earthy root vegetables and butternut squash which was by far the highlight of the meal.

The mouthful serving of the lightly toasted soft Baron Bigod cheese came on a piece of fruit loaf drizzled with Cotswolds honey and proved just enough, leaving room for the chocolate and chestnut dessert with vanilla ice cream.

The friendly, attentive service adds to the overall charm, creating a dining experience that is as warm and welcoming as it is refined.

Its 32 individually decorated rooms, spread across the Main House, Coach House and Beech Cottage, provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. Our room, located in the Main House, epitomised the thoughtful design found throughout the property. Each en-suite bedroom is individually styled with a blend of period furniture, richly patterned wallpapers, and plush fabrics. Room 1, for instance, features an 18th-century-inspired aesthetic, a super king-sized bed, and inviting armchairs perfect for taking in the views. Details such as binoculars to enjoy the sweeping views, homemade biscuits and fresh milk elevate the experience further.

The next morning, breakfast lived up to the hotel’s high standards. We ordered salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough, as well as a vegetarian breakfast, both of which were excellent. Guests can also request extra freshly prepared dishes on the morning, ensuring variety and satisfaction to suit every taste.

Guests can start their day with a refreshing walk through the surrounding hills, accessible directly from the hotel grounds.
