FINDING SERENITY IN THE SANDS: A RETREAT AT ZULAL WELLNESS RESORT BY CHIVA-SOM
As the Arabian Gulf gently recedes, revealing an expanse of pristine white sand, it becomes clear why this tranquil stretch of coastline was chosen for a wellness retreat. Far removed from the fast pace of city life, Zulal Wellness Resort offers a space where nature and well-being converge.
Just an hour’s drive north of Doha’s gleaming skyline and futuristic towers lies a serene sanctuary far removed from the city’s hustle. Spanning an impressive 280,000 square meters, this groundbreaking destination is redefining wellness in the Middle East. As the region’s first resort to fully integrate the ancient wisdom of Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine (TAIM), Zulal offers a transformative experience that nurtures the mind, body, and soul.
The resort is thoughtfully divided into two parts: Discovery, which caters to families, and Serenity, a peaceful haven for adults only. Upon arrival, we’re welcomed with the traditional Arabic tea ritual, a refreshing green tea infused with fruit, and invited to explore the House of Wisdom. This charming library features an eclectic range of books, from psychology and philosophy to art and travel, all available to borrow. Already embracing the resort’s promise of enlightenment, we pick up two copies of Rebel Ideas by Matthew Syed, eager for a journey that promises new insights for both body and mind.
Our suite; a one-bedroom Serenity Junior, is a serene oasis. Decorated in natural hues with artwork evoking the sea’s frothy waves, it’s the epitome of understated elegance. The open-plan design flows seamlessly from a spacious hallway into a living area and bedroom, and our private outdoor space, complete with a plunge pool, becomes our favourite spot to relax between treatments and workouts.
Tailoring Our Wellness Journey
After settling in, we’re introduced to the heart of our stay: a personalised wellness consultation. Zulal offers an impressive array of over 400 treatments, therapies, and activities, each designed to foster physical, mental and emotional well-being. For us, this trip is about resetting — after weeks of travel, we’re ready to refocus on fitness, healthy eating, and, thanks to coordinating our stay with Ramadan, a much-needed break from alcohol.
The resort’s philosophy is deeply rooted in Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine (TAIM), combining ancient healing practices with modern wellness techniques. Like its Thai sibling, Chiva-Som, Zulal’s programs blend holistic therapies with Qatari cultural traditions, offering a truly unique experience.
Our schedule, designed by doctors Brenda and Aashley, balances fitness and relaxation. Personal trainer Wahid pushes us just outside our comfort zone with expert guidance, while Mahmoud’s stretching sessions help ease muscle stiffness.
Embracing Wellness in the Heat
Guests at Zulal are encouraged to embrace the resort’s tranquil atmosphere, donning breathable, white pyjamas and turquoise flip-flops which are provided in each room. Walking around in matching attire creates a surreal sense of calm, like being part of a peaceful sci-fi community as we move between appointments.
April (when we visit) brings pleasantly warm temperatures, hovering in the low 30s, making outdoor activities more manageable than the sweltering heat of summer a Qatari summer. For those who miss the chill of colder climates, the Arctic Room provides a blast of icy air reminiscent of European winters.
The spa itself is a sanctuary, offering a variety of thermal experiences, including steam rooms, saunas, and hydrotherapy pools. The Himalayan Salt Room is a particular favourite — with its heated ceramic beds and purifying salt air, it’s the perfect place to unwind while reading Rebel Ideas. After each session, I leave feeling rejuvenated and ready to embrace the next part of the retreat.
Unplugging for Peace
Beyond treatments, Zulal’s pristine coastline and peaceful surroundings provide little distraction — by design. Guests are encouraged to leave their devices in their rooms and disconnect from the outside world, allowing full immersion in the retreat’s calming environment. It’s a suggestion that most visitors take to heart, letting the stunning natural landscape and topography serve as the only diversion.
Dining at Zulal
Mealtimes at Zulal are a celebration of fresh, nutritious cuisine. Whether your goal is weight loss, muscle building, or simply enjoying the finest flavours, the resort’s portion-controlled dishes are artfully presented and bursting with taste. Despite three courses, you never feel overindulged — instead, each meal is carefully crafted to provide the right balance of nutrients.
The resort’s dining options are diverse, offering a variety of culinary experiences. Al Sidr’s menu features Asian fusion dishes, while Malbu, the outdoor Mediterranean seafood restaurant, provides an unforgettable meal under the stars. Aizoon, with its Arabic and international fare, is run by the lively and attentive Rony, ensuring each meal feels like a special occasion. The presentation is nothing short of Michelin-starred, and the culinary ingenuity with creative substitutes in place of traditional high-fat ingredients is exceptional. You won’t feel like you are missing out on anything – even the delightful array of bread, from spirulina and charcoal to turmeric and pumpkin rolls, is a treat.
For guests looking to maintain their fitness goals, high-protein meals are readily available, and the knowledgeable chefs ensure each dish is as nourishing as it is delicious. Marinades, we learn, are key to infusing flavour without compromising on health. The resort’s year-round dry policy feels liberating, with inventive mocktails ensuring we never miss a traditional cocktail buzz.
The Chiva-Som brand
Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som is a haven for those seeking holistic well-being in a breathtaking natural setting. Combining the best of Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine with state-of-the-art wellness programs, this pioneering resort is set to become a go-to destination for mindful travellers. Whether you’re looking to kickstart a fitness journey, rejuvenate with ancient healing practices, or simply unwind in serene surroundings, Zulal offers a transformative experience.
For those familiar with Chiva-Som in Thailand, don’t expect Zulal to be a mere replica in a new location—there are key differences. Zulal offers a secluded oasis in a vast, desert-like setting, while Chiva-Som enjoys a beachfront location with easy access to nearby hotels and lively night markets. The Thai resort’s renowned hospitality has earned it accolades, including being named the world’s top destination spa. While Zulal may feel less community-focused, it’s important to remember that Chiva-Som has nearly three decades of experience. Given time, its younger Qatari counterpart is sure to catch up.
