Yinka Ilori Lights Up Chicago’s THE MART with ART on THE MART Installation
Ilori’s signature bright colours envelop THE MART, an architectural landmark spanning two city blocks and 2.5 acres. His commission for ART on THE MART, titled ‘Omi Okun’ (Yoruban for ‘Sea Water’), is on view nightly at 9pm and 9:30pm CT through to September 11th. This 15-minute immersive film intertwines Ilori’s memories with the Pentecostal Aladura church in Nigeria and the transformative journeys beyond. The narrative follows a church member through various rituals and a seaside pilgrimage, depicting the quest for healing and strength in community. Central to the film is Psalm 24 of David, recited by Ilori, reflecting on the sovereignty of higher powers. This animation transcends religious boundaries, inviting viewers to explore their own beliefs and find solace and inspiration.
